Enclosure Tutorial: Types


This section provides and in-depth look into each of the four primary enclosure types in use today: sealed, ported, bandpass, and isobaric systems. It also offers tips on their construction. 
Sealed:
The sealed (aka: air-suspension, acoustic-suspension) enclosure is a classic box design. Patented in 1949 by Harry Olson, this design has stood the test of time.  more info...
Ported:
Ported enclosures (aka: Bass-Reflex, Vented) have actually been around longer than sealed designs.  more info...
Bandpass:
Many home sub/satellite speaker systems currently use bandpass designs for low-frequency reproduction. Designs from Bose, KEF, and many others have become very popular in home audio circles.  more info...
Isobaric:
Having been originally introduced by Harry Olson in the early 1950's. Technically, "isobaric" is not really an enclosure type; it is a loading method. This loading method involves the coupling of two woofers to work together as one unit.  more info...
